Porsche introduced the first 911 GTS model 12 years ago. Now, this new generation of the popular sports car model has arrived in Australia – more powerful and visually distinctive, and with better driving dynamics than ever before.

Australian model range

The new 911 GTS range comprises five model variants in Australia:

  • 911 Carrera GTS Coupe (with rear-wheel drive)
  • 911 Carrera GTS Cabriolet (with rear-wheel drive)
  • 911 Carrera 4 GTS Coupe (with all-wheel drive)
  • 911 Carrera 4 GTS Cabriolet (with all-wheel drive)
  • 911 Targa 4 GTS (with all-wheel drive)

GTS: Three letters with meaning and history at Porsche

The name Gran Turismo Sport (or Grand Tourer Sport, when translated) classifies Porsche models that offer an extra level of sportiness with an outstanding level of comfort for everyday usability.

The name GTS first appeared on a Porsche almost 60 years ago and gained fame when works racing drivers Colin Davis and Antonio Pucci drove the Porsche 904 GTS to victory in the 1964 Targa Florio, one of Italy’s famed endurance races.

The duo took the win after seven hours and ten minutes of driving at the absolute limit.

To win, their Porsche 904 needed the right level of high performance. And the drivers needed the right level of comfort to stay focused for the duration of the race.

So Porsche’s engineers blended this mix of performance and comfort and created the 904 GTS, which was launched on 26 November 1963.

Engine: more powerful than ever before

The new 911 GTS range is powered by Porsche’s bi-turbo (twin-turbocharged) 3.0-litre flat-six-cylinder petrol engine.

It delivers a peak power level of 353 kW / 480 PS* at 6,500 RPM, which is 22 kW / 30 PS* more than its predecessor (and the current 911 Carrera S.)

Peak torque is now 570 Nm (from 2,300 – 5,000 RPM), 20 Nm more.

The key features that underpin the engine’s impressive outputs are:

  • Two symmetrically designed turbochargers: Their turbine wheels (which are driven by the engine’s outgoing exhaust gases) and compressor wheels (which then send compressed air into the engine’s intake system) are arranged as mirror images of the engine and therefore rotate in opposite directions.
  • Electrically controlled wastegate valves: The wastegate valves (which control the level of air pressure the turbos produce) use electrically controlled stepper motors that allow the boost level to be regulated precisely and quickly, up to a maximum boost pressure of around 1.3 bar.
  • Twin intercoolers: These cool the turbochargers’ compressed air before it enters the engine. They are located on top of the engine and under the rear engine lid grille.
  • Precise Piezo injector valves: These make up to five injections of fuel directly into each combustion chamber during each working cycle. Their extremely fast opening and closing processes and high pressure level (up to 200 bar) ensure every injection of fuel is highly precise. This helps optimise fuel combustion for excellent power, torque and fuel consumption.
  • VarioCam Plus variable valve control system: This controls the engine’s levels of valve lift according to the demands the driver places on the engine. In partial load operation, the two adjacent valves of a cylinder open with different strokes. When full stroke is needed for higher engine performance, both intake valves of the cylinder open with parallel strokes. The effect is reduced fuel consumption and lower exhaust emissions.
  • Compression ratio of 10.2:1: This is a high ratio for a turbocharged engine. It delivers a noticeable power increase while maintaining very good engine response.
  • Reinforced dual mass flywheel (DMF): This has been adapted to the higher torque output of the 911 GTS engine.

Sports exhaust: unmistakable Porsche sound

The new 911 GTS sports exhaust system is a dual-flow design that features map-control and fully variable exhaust flaps. The control system enables optimum gas flow and an emotive sports-car sound.

Stepper motors control the exhaust flaps, which allow intermediate positions to be set.

Some of the interior’s sound insulation has been removed to enhance the sound experience when driving the new 911 GTS.

Transmission: 8-speed PDK or 7-speed manual

The new 911 GTS is fitted with an eight-speed PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung - German for ‘double coupling’) dual-clutch transmission.

This has been further developed for the new 911 GTS with these features:

  • More harmonious gear ratios
  • A new oil pump regulates the oil pressure needed for gearshifts and clutch operations, as demanded by the driver
  • Lower-friction oils, which reduces power losses in the transmission

Available only on the 911 Carrera GTS Coupe (with rear-wheel drive) is a seven-speed manual gearbox. It has a short shift action, meaning the gear lever is 10 millimeters shorter than before, which enhances the pleasure of changing gears manually.

Sport Chrono package with Sport Response button

The Sport Chrono package is fitted as standard equipment to the new 911 GTS. This package comprises:

  • Driving Mode switch (rotational) mounted to the GT sport steering wheel, with the chosen driving mode (Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, Individual) displayed in the instrument cluster
  • Stopwatch
  • Porsche Track Precision App
  • A separately switchable PSM Sport mode in the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) system
  • Tyre temperature display

The Sport Response button further enhances driving performance and driving enjoyment. This button is located in the centre of the round Drive Mode switch and pressing it lets the driver switch the engine and transmission response to maximum performance for 20 seconds.

When the manual transmission is fitted on the 911 Carrera GTS Coupe (with rear-wheel drive), the intermediate throttle function (the in-built ‘heel-and-toe throttle blip’ on down-changes), which is a default setting in Sport mode, can now be switched off when desired.


The chassis in the new 911 GTS is derived from the 911 Turbo and modified to suit this new model’s performance demands.

    -- Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM):

Porsche’s latest-generation PASM is fitted to the new 911 GTS range.  

PASM ensures the car’s shock absorbers respond to dynamic changes at lightning speed.

Greater ride comfort is now provided by much softer damping when the suspension compresses and rebounds.

Alternatively, PASM can make the shock absorbers much firmer, giving dynamic handling advantages in terms of body control, road-holding, steering behaviour and potential cornering speeds.

    -- Ride height:

In the new 911 GTS Coupe and Cabriolet, a 10 mm-lower PASM Sport suspension is fitted as standard.

Just like the 911 Turbo models, these two GTS model variants use helper springs on the rear suspension to keep the main suspension springs under tension in all driving conditions. This optimises the suspension’s rebound action.

The new 911 GTS Targa is fitted with unlowered PASM suspension. This feature can be selected as an option for the 911 Coupe and Cabriolet versions at no cost.

    -- Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV):

PTV delivers benefits to steering behaviour and traction by supplementing the Porsche Stability Management (PSM) with intelligent braking interventions on the rear wheels.

There are two versions of PTV available for the new 911 GTS, depending on the transmission chosen:

When the 8-speed PDK transmission is fitted: PTV Plus with an electronically controlled, fully variable differential lock is fitted. This improves traction when accelerating out of corners.

When the 7-speed manual transmission is fitted on the 911 Carrera GTS Coupe (with rear-wheel drive): PTV with mechanical differential lock and an intermediate throttle function are fitted.

    -- Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC):

The optional Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC) hydraulic active anti-roll stabilisation system further refines the sports driving dynamics and agility of the new 911 GTS.

    -- Rear Axle Steering:

This optional feature offers greater agility on narrow bends, more manoeuvrability in traffic, and more stability when changing lanes at higher speeds. Up to approximately 50 km/h the system steers the rear wheels a small amount in the opposite direction to the front wheels. Over 80 km/h it steers the wheels in the same direction, enhancing manoeuvring stability at speed.

    -- Front Axle Lift Function:

This optional electrohydraulic lift system raises the front of the 911 GTS by around 40 mm to increase ground clearance for obstacles such as steep multi-storey car parks and sharp road humps.

    -- Power Steering Plus:

The standard-fitment Power Steering Plus gives drivers additional comfort.

At higher speeds, the steering is firm and gives good feedback on driving conditions, road surface and lateral acceleration.

At low speeds, greater steering force support makes maneuvering and parking easier. 


The new 911 GTS uses the same grey cast iron braking system used in the 911 Turbo.

The braking system’s key components are:

Front brakes:
408 mm diameter discs (38 mm thickness)
Six-piston aluminium monobloc fixed calipers

Rear brakes:
380 mm diameter discs (30 mm thickness)
Four-piston fixed calipers

The brake calipers on the new 911 GTS are red in colour but can be specified in black.

The Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) is optionally available. Boasting higher thermal load capability, these brake discs are 410 millimetres in diameter at the front and 390 millimetres at the rear and offer high resistance to fade, faster response on dry roads, and lower weight.

The brake calipers with the PCCB system are yellow in colour but can be specified in black. 

Wheels and tyres

The centre-lock forged alloy wheels (20-inch front, 21-inch rear) are derived from the 911 Turbo S.

They have a satin black finish and their wheel hub covers have a coloured Porsche crest.   

Their dimensions are:

8.5J x 20 ET50 with 245/35 ZR 20 tyres

11.5J x 21 ET67 with 305/30 ZR 21 tyres

Driving performance

The new 911 GTS range delivers exceptional driving performance. Its key figures are:

  • 0 – 100 km/h takes 3.3 seconds in the 911 Carrera 4 GTS Coupe with PDK – three tenths quicker than its predecessor
  • Top speed is 311 km/h (911 Carrera GTS Coupe)
  • Standing-start quarter-mile time is 11.5 seconds

Exterior design: multiple highlights in black

The new 911 GTS range combines the modern look of the current 992 generation with a distinctive and uniquely sporting appearance.

Various darkened exterior details characterise the 911 GTS range. The exterior design elements painted in satin black include:

  • Front spoiler lip
  • Centre-lock alloy wheels
  • GTS script on the doors and rear
  • Rear lid grille slats

The two tailpipes of the sports exhaust system are finished in high-gloss black stainless steel.

The 911 Targa 4 GTS has its iconic roll hoop finished in black, along with its Targa lettering.

All 911 GTS models are fitted with the SportDesign package with its distinctive satin black trims front and rear.

The rims of the tinted LED main headlights (which include Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus)) and the edging of the daytime running lights are also darkened.

There are 12 paint colour choices (four solid colours and eight metallic colours) available with the new 911 GTS.

And there are four colour options for the convertible top on the 911 GTS Cabriolet models.

Interior design: sporty, comfortable and stylish

The sports-oriented details continue in the interior.

Inlays of brushed and black anodised aluminium adorn the centre console trim, the door panel trims, and the trim strips on the dashboard. The door sill guards also have the same finish.

The standard-fitment Race-Tex interior package in black underlines the elegant and dynamic environment of the 911 GTS. The stylish material covers the following components:

  • Seat centres (front and rear)
  • Door handles
  • Door panel armrests
  • Steering wheel rim
  • Gear lever / selector
  • Centre console main storage compartment lid (partial coverage)

The front-seat headrests feature the embroidered black GTS script.

    -- Seats

Sports seats Plus with four-way electric operation are standard fitment in the new 911 GTS range. They provide lateral support when cornering along with comfort and convenience.

Adaptive Sports seats Plus with 18-way electric adjustment and memory package (for storing the positions of the front seats, steering wheel and exterior mirrors) are available as an option.

Even sportier are the optionally available lightweight full bucket seats made of Carbon-Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) with a carbon-weave finish. These seats are highly evocative of motorsport. They are available only on the 911 GTS Coupe models and the rear seats are omitted when they’re selected. Child seats are not compatible with this full-bucket seat option.

Porsche Communication Management (PCM)

The new 911 GTS range is fitted with the sixth generation of Porsche Communication Management (PCM), known as PCM 6.0.

Along with a BOSE® Surround-Sound system and DAB+ digital radio, it features deep integration with Apple Music and Apple Podcast streaming services as well as Android Auto.

PCM 6.0 allows wireless Apple Car Play connection. Owners can set up a wireless connection between their iPhone and their car through the 10.9-inch touch screen or using Siri voice control.

Owners who use a smartphone with the Google Android operating system can connect to the 911 GTS via a USB cable.

  -- Deeper integration of Apple Music and Apple Podcasts

Subscribers to Apple Music1 can listen to more than 75 million songs and stream thousands of playlists ad-free via a three-year, free in-car internet connection. They can also listen to more than 1.5 million shows from the Apple Podcasts platform. All they have to do is sync their Apple ID to the 911 GTS.

They don’t even have to have their Apple iPhone with them in the car to access Apple Podcasts or Apple Music.

    -- Voice Control:

Drivers of the new 911 GTS need only say “Hey Porsche” and give instructions in everyday speech.

Here are two examples of Voice Control at work:

  • “I need petrol”: this prompts the navigation system to find a route to the nearest petrol station.
  • “I’m cold”: automatically increases the interior temperature.

    -- Navigation system:

The navigation system now calculates even faster, taking real-time traffic into account.

The map view has a clearer design and, depending on the traffic conditions, the roads are displayed in different colours.

The route monitor enables fast access to all relevant data and the system displays lane-specific traffic information.

    -- Other digital functions with PCM:

PCM 6.0 also offers:

  • Software that can be updated using over-the-air technology
  • An interactive operating manual
  • Smartphone calendar entries are displayed on the touchscreen via the Porsche Connect App
  • Users can dial into telephone conference calls using the Calendar service when the Bluetooth connection is active

Assistance and Comfort systems

Various available assistance systems make driving the new 911 GTS safer and more comfortable, especially in daily traffic. Highlights include:

  • Tinted LED main headlights with Porsche Dynamic Light System Plus (PDLS Plus): Each main headlight has 84 LEDs that work together with upstream lenses and the high-current LEDs of the auxiliary high beam for maximum road illumination at night.
  • Warn and Brake Assist: Significantly reduces the risk of collisions with vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians by giving the driver visual and acoustic warnings. A second phase provides a braking jolt should there be greater danger. If the driver then brakes, full braking is provided if needed. Should the driver not react, automatic emergency braking is initiated to mitigate the consequences of a collision.
  • Adaptive Cruise Control: Offers automatic distance control from the vehicle ahead by matching its speed, and can even bring the 911 GTS to a complete standstill. It includes a coasting function when possible to help reduce fuel consumption. And it also has a stop-and-go function, which is especially useful in slow-moving traffic.
  • Lane Change Assist: Uses a radar sensor to detect the distance and speed of traffic behind the 911 GTS in adjacent lanes. If the speed and distance to the 911 GTS are deemed too risky for a lane change, a warning is shown to the driver in the left or right exterior mirror.
  • Active Parking Support: Automatically detects a parking space of suitable size. When engaged, the system takes over the car’s steering and slow forwards / backwards movements to maneuver the 911 GTS into the space. It includes a 3D surround view on the PCM screen as well as Rear Cross Traffic Alert, which warns the driver if another vehicle is approaching when they’re reversing slowly from, for example, a perpendicular parking space.
