Pascal Wehrlein takes second win of the season in Shanghai

Pascal Wehrlein took his second win of the season for the Porsche Formula E Team in Saturday’s ABB FIA Formula E World Championship Shanghai E-Prix. Jake Dennis and Felipe Drugovich of the Porsche customer team Andretti Formula E finished P3 and P4.

With the points scored for first and third place, Porsche has extended its lead in the manufacturers’ standings. Wehrlein took an additional three points for claiming his third pole position of the season in qualifying, moving him up to second in the drivers’ standings. Teammate Nico Müller finished the race tenth.

In his Porsche 99X Electric, Wehrlein led most of the 30-lap race, which included a mandatory pit stop to fast-charge 10 % of energy. Still at the front after a brief appearance of the Porsche Taycan Turbo GT safety car in the closing stages, the German activated his Attack Mode in wet conditions, gaining all-wheel drive for increased grip. He claimed the 10th Formula E victory of his career by 1.6 seconds. It marked his first win in Shanghai and Porsche’s second at the venue, after António Félix da Costa’s success in 2024.

With P10, Müller finished just inside the points after starting P14 but was unable to make more progress on the wet track before the end.

The factory-run Porsche Formula E Team remained second in the teams’ standings. With five races to go, Wehrlein sits three points behind the leader.

Racing for Charity

Under the motto Racing for Charity, Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is making a strong social statement in the current Formula E season, supporting seriously ill children worldwide. For every lap completed by its two factory-run Porsche 99X Electric, the Stuttgart-based sports car manufacturer donates 400 euros to the charitable organizations Kinderherzen retten e.V., Interplast Germany e.V., and the Ferry Porsche Foundation. After Pascal Wehrlein and Nico Müller completed the maximum number of laps at the twelfth race of the season in Shanghai, the donation amount stands at 316,400 Euro.

Comments on the Shanghai E-Prix

Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E: “An amazing win today for Pascal after taking an impressive pole position, which means he has closed the gap to Mitch Evans in the championship. As a team, we also reduced the gap to Jaguar slightly. With the rain and the humidity, conditions today were difficult, so well done to everybody in the team for doing a really good job, including our colleagues back at the factory in Weissach. Nico also showed good pace in practice, but in qualifying he was not quite there. We now need to analyse what happened so we can improve for tomorrow. P3 for Jake Dennis and the Andretti team means another strong result for our customers after their win in Sanya. Thanks to them as well, Porsche has increased its lead in the manufacturers’ standings. Our target for tomorrow is to score strong points with both factory cars.”

Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche factory driver (#94): “A fantastic race at a crucial stage of the season. I couldn’t be happier with today – it was a flawless performance and the car was amazing. We didn’t make any mistakes and the execution was perfect. I had really good pace, so I didn’t feel it was necessary to stay in the slipstream that much, which meant I could keep away from the chaos behind. A big thanks to the team. With five races still to go, we will give it our all and try to bring home as many trophies as possible.”

Nico Müller, Porsche factory driver (#51): “I had some issues in qualifying that prevented me from starting further up the grid, but the car clearly had potential. Pascal showed that today, and congratulations to him on the victory and pole position. My qualifying issues left me in the pack, but I managed to move up and it looked like we were in contention for points. However, some incidents, being on the wrong side of the Pit Boost strategy and unfortunate timing with our Attack Mode meant we lost ground. It was not the day I was hoping for, but I get another chance tomorrow and we will make up for it.”
