Larry ten Voorde wins rain race in the Eifel

In torrential rain at the Nürburgring, Larry ten Voorde clinched his second commanding lights-to-flag victory this weekend. The Dutchman won round eight of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland ahead of Porsche Junior Bastian Buus from Denmark and Leon Köhler from Germany. Thanks to this result, ten Voorde increased his lead over Harry King in the overall standings to 51 points. The UK racer finished fifth at the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup fielded by Allied-Racing, only to have a time penalty relegate him to nineth place.

Race 8

Heavy rain fell over the Eifel shortly before the start of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland race. This threw challenges at the mechanics on the grid of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland as they quickly swapped slicks for rain tyres, adjusted the anti-roll bars to a very soft setting and increased the ride height of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup to improve mechanical traction. Also, the angle of the rear wing was set steeper to generate more downforce on the rear axle – with only a few minutes available to do this, more was not possible. “Nevertheless, it was the right call not to have a rolling start behind the safety car but to have a standing start,” said winner Larry ten Voorde, praising the race director’s decision.

Competing for the GP Elite squad, the Dutchman clinched his 30th pole position in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland – and he held tight to his advantage at the start and again when the race was restarted twice after safety car phases. Repeating his dominant performance from Saturday’s race, he netted his fifth win of the season. “The water on the track made the race feel like dancing on the edge of a razor blade,” said the two-time Carrera Cup champion, describing the track conditions. “But I think we put on a great show for the spectators.”

In the overall standings, Larry ten Voorde now holds a significant lead over Harry King. The Englishman from the German team Allied-Racing crossed the finish line in fifth place at the Nürburgring. However, after causing a collision during the race, he was handed a 10-second penalty. As a result, King fell back to nineth place in the official standings.

Second place went to Porsche Junior Bastian Buus, who lined up on the grid next to ten Voorde on the front row. However, the 20-year-old Dane from the Allied Racing team had to work hard for it. Immediately after the start, he lost several positions and then locked horns for several laps with the strong rookie Alexander Tauscher, who held second for some time. “This was only the second standing start in the rain in my career. I didn’t get off the line well because I got too much wheelspin,” admitted Buus. “I’m pleased that I still achieved second place – I really need those championship points.”

For Alexander Tauscher, Bastian Buus was not the only tough rival in the race. During the second half of the 15-lap sprint, the 21-year-old rookie went head-to-head with seasoned specialist Leon Köhler, his teammate at Huber Racing. Shortly before the finish, Köhler swept into third place. “My start didn't go well, so Alexander overtook me in the sprint to the first corner. Because he’s my teammate, I obviously didn’t want to take any major risks in the duel with him. At some point it worked out – I’m thrilled with my second podium finish this weekend,” stated the German.

Dutchman Morris Schuring (FACH AUTO TECH) took the flag in fifth place behind Alexander Tauscher. Vincent Andronaco finished sixth, thus winning the rookie classification. “The race was extremely challenging due to the wet track and the limited visibility – but it was a lot of fun,” said the 18-year-old from Hamburg about his first rookie victory. In a repeat of Saturday’s performance, Sören Spreng crossed the finish line first in the ProAm category in his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. “I survived the chaos of the first laps and then managed to make it through the remaining laps unscathed despite the tough conditions,” reported the German, who also ranks first in the ProAm category.

“What a race! The mechanics had their work cut out for them right before the start and so did the drivers. I’m proud that despite the extremely difficult conditions, they gave the spectators an action-packed and fair show. I’m particularly pleased that Vincent Andronaco, another driver from the Talent Pool, has won the Rookie classification. Congratulations also to Larry ten Voorde on his fifth win of the season and to Sören Spreng, who has emerged as a title aspirant in the ProAm classification,” commented Hurui Issak, Project Manager of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland.

Race 7

Larry ten Voorde is the victor of round seven of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland at the Nürburgring. Tackling the race from pole position in the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup fielded by the GP Elite team, the Dutchman held on to his lead to the finish. UK driver Harry King from the Allied-Racing team secured second place uncontested. Huber Racing driver Leon Köhler from Germany completed the podium. The next Carrera Cup race gets underway on Sunday (6 August 2023) at 11:20 am local.

Larry ten Voorde’s relief was obvious: After two mediocre races in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup – Porsche’s international one-make cup with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup – the Dutchman clinched a commanding lights-to-flag victory in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland at the Nürburgring. “The last two weeks were perhaps the most difficult in my career so far. But we didn’t give up. The team and I worked incredibly hard to get back to our old form. First place today is a great reward, a weight is lifted from my heart,” said the 26-year-old. Thanks to his fourth victory in seven races in the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, Larry ten Voorde has extended his lead in the overall standings.

On the sprint version of the Nürburgring, Harry King crossed the finish line in second place, 2.5 seconds behind. “Considering that this was my first race at this track, I’m satisfied. My goal for Sunday’s race is of course another podium finish,” commented the 22-year-old from Windsor, England. At the wheel of the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup campaigned by the German team Allied-Racing, he promptly swept past Morris Schuring (FACH AUTO TECH) after just a few metres. When the race restarted after a safety car phase, King was able to pull away from the pack of pursuers seemingly effortlessly.

This group was led by Leon Köhler, who also got past Schuring on the first lap as a consequence of the Dutchman’s mediocre start. “The season hasn’t been great for me so far. That’s why I’m particularly happy and also delighted for the team that I’m finally back on the podium. Maybe I can finish even further up the field in Sunday’s race,” said Köhler, as he heads into the eighth Carrera Cup round.

Porsche Junior Bastian Buus, Harry King’s teammate at Allied-Racing, crossed the line in fourth. But the Dane lost this position due to a time penalty, which relegated him to sixth behind Dutchmen Loek Hartog (Team GP Elite) and Morris Schuring (FACH AUTO TECH).

FACH AUTO TECH driver Jasin Ferati clinched his maiden victory in the Rookie classification. “I’m on the Rookie podium for the first time, and at the very top – I could get used to that,” beamed the Swiss racer, who just turned 20. Sören Spreng was the best-placed driver in the ProAm class. Thanks to this result, the German from the GP Elite squad took the lead in the ProAm rankings.

Preview

For round four of the season, the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland heads to the Nürburgring next weekend (4-6 August 2023). The 32-strong field of Porsche 911 GT3 Cup cars will tackle two 30-minute races on the short version of the Grand Prix circuit on Saturday and Sunday. One of the hot favourites is championship leader Larry ten Voorde: Last year, the two-time Carrera Cup champion from the Netherlands celebrated a victory in Germany’s Eifel region.

“On the short 3.6-kilometre version of the Grand Prix circuit, the lap times will be even closer than usual. That’ll be stressful, especially in qualifying. But even if things don’t go as smoothly as I’d like in qualifying, there are plenty of chances to overtake, so we can make up places in the race,” says Larry ten Voorde, the current leader of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland standings. After clinching three victories so far this season, the Dutchman from the GP Elite team refuses to put himself under pressure. “Of course, I’d like to repeat my success from 2022 and win at least one race but I have a 28-point lead over the runner-up in the standings – so it’s really my pursuers who are under pressure.”

His hottest pursuer, Harry King, trails 28 points behind. The UK racer has won one round this season at the wheel of his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. “This is the first time I will contest a race at the Nürburgring. I only know the circuit from the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland’s official test day. It was raining then, which influenced my preparation,” explains the Allied-Racing driver. “My main goal is to close the gap to Larry.”

While Loek Hartog has won two races so far this season, the tall GP Elite driver has been off his game recently. “I’m not sure why things went so badly at my home race at Zandvoort of all places,” says the Dutchman, who had to settle for a fifth and eleventh in front of his home crowd and as a result, forfeited his lead in the standings. “I hope I can find my way back to old form at the Nürburgring. The track suits me and I want to fight for a podium finish again.”

Scoring two second-place results at Zandvoort, Porsche Junior Bastian Buus has edged closer to the leading group. “After a few setbacks at the start of the season, things are going really well now. I like the Nürburgring, the races there are always exciting. I might even manage to bring home my first win of the season,” states the 20-year-old Dane.

“The Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland drivers know the Nürburgring very well – it’s a regular fixture in our calendar, and we also ran the official pre-season test here, so things should be very competitive at the top. So far this season we’ve had three different winners. Let’s see if we can add a fourth and maybe even a fifth in the Eifel,” says Hurui Issak, Project Manager Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland, looking ahead to the upcoming Carrera Cup weekend.

Issak is expecting some very special guests at the Nürburgring: a delegation from Frankfurt Galaxy. The American Football team recently gave the young drivers from the Talent Pool an exclusive look behind the scenes of their professional team. In return, the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland has invited the athletes to get a taste of the motor racing world.

Classification for Rookies, ProAm and Teams

Larry ten Voorde, Loek Hartog and Huub van Eijndhoven compete for GP Elite. The Dutch racing team currently leads the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland team standings. Their closest rival is Allied-Racing from Bavaria with drivers Porsche Junior Bastian Buus, Harry King and Vincent Andronaco.

In addition to the overall driver and team rankings, the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland also awards points in the Rookie and ProAm categories. Among the newcomers, eleven talented youngsters from six countries pit themselves against each other. Theo Oeverhaus defends his championship lead after six races. Competing for the CarTech Motorsport Bonk team, the German lies sixth overall and is the best-placed young driver from the Talent Pool. Bulgarian Georgi Donchev from the ProfilDoors by Huber Racing team currently tops the ProAm standings.
