Larry ten Voorde dominates the Supercup finale and wins the title

The previous points leader Dylan Pereira (Luxembourg/BWT Lechner Racing) finished on fourth behind Florian Latorre (France/CLRT) and rookie Leon Köhler (Germany/Lechner Racing Middle East). With this result, Pereira concluded the season as runner-up in the overall standings ahead of Porsche Juniors Ayhancan Güven (Turkey/Martinet by Alméras) and Jaxon Evans (New Zealand/BWT Lechner Racing).

“My dream has come true. I didn’t think this would’ve been possible at the start of the season. My team improved from race to race,” said a delighted Larry ten Voorde, who won three of the eight rounds of this season’s Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. His victory at the final in Monza only came under threat twice: After the start and at the restart after a safety car phase, Lattore attempted to overtake him, but abandoned his bid both times. “I didn’t want to risk too much interfering with the title decision,” admitted the Frenchman. “Second place is sensational; it’s my best result for my team by now.”

Dylan Pereira struggled to match the pace of Larry ten Voorde and Florian Latorre. At the midway mark of the race, he even had to surrender third place to Leon Köhler. “I’ve had trouble with the pace on fast tracks all year. The problem cropped up again here at Monza,” explained Pereira. A handicap that was particularly evident on the Formula 1 circuit in Monza. The so-called “Temple of Speed” on the outskirts of Milan was the fastest circuit on the calendar of this year’s Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup, with an average speed of over 191 km/h in qualifying. The 2020 season also included rounds at the Grand Prix circuits of the Red Bull Ring Spielberg (Austria), Hungaroring (Hungary), Silverstone (Great Britain), Barcelona (Spain) and Spa-Francorchamps (Belgium).

“Thanks as well to our long-standing partnership with Formula One, we managed to run the 28th Supercup season at the usual high level, despite the restrictions. Eight races over ten weekends – I’m impressed by how the teams mastered this huge challenge. The fact that the title decision was made at the last race underlines the balanced competition among the top drivers. Congratulations to the overall winner Larry ten Voorde as well as the winners of the Rookie, ProAm and Team classifications,” said Oliver Schwab, Project Manager Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup.

Leon Köhler was the best rookie with third place. “I fluffed the start a bit, which is how Dylan Pereira got past me,” stated the German. “I then improved lap to lap and was able to overtake Dylan again.” The rookie trophy goes to Max van Splunteren (Team GP Elite), who took the flag in 13th place. “I was worried about the rookie title. In the beginning, Marvin was far ahead of me and could have caught up with me in the rankings,” said the Dutchman. It was only when pursuer Marvin Klein (Martinet by Alméras) briefly drove off the track and dropped back to the midfield that Van Splunteren could be sure of claiming the rookie title – just two points ahead of the Frenchman.

Porsche Junior Jaxon Evans concluded the 2020 season on fifth place in Monza, beating rookies Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer (France/Lechner Racing Middle East) and Jordan Love (Australia/FACH AUTO TECH). Marius Nakken (Norway/Dinamic Motorsport), guest driver Diego Bertonelli (Italy/FACH AUTO TECH) and Klein rounded off the top ten. The second Porsche Junior Ayhancan Güven had to retire shortly before the flag with a puncture.

Victory in the team classification went to the Austrian squad BWT Lechner Racing. The ProAm title was claimed already at the previous round in Spa-Francorchamps by Roar Lindland (Pierre Martinet by Alméras). The Norwegian also won this category at Monza, finishing the race in 18th overall.

Qualifying

Larry ten Voorde has secured the best grid position for the final round of the 2020 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. Clocking the fastest time in qualifying, the Dutchman is well set up to claim his third win of the season. A victory would also hand him the title in the international one-make cup run with the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. “I left the pits behind everyone else. This meant I had the track basically to myself and that’s how I managed a flawless lap,” said a pleased Ten Voorde (Team GP Elite). “This is the most important pole position of my career by now. I really need to win the race on Sunday.”

Ten Voorde shares the first grid row with Florian Latorre (France/CLRT). Points leader Dylan Pereira (BWT Lechner Racing), however, has to slot in behind Leon Köhler (Germany/Lechner Racing Middle East) on the fourth grid spot. “Of course, it’s anything but optimal. I have to take a look at where I lost time. It’ll definitely be hard work in the race,” admitted the Luxembourger, who would be forced to relinquish the title if Ten Voorde won.

The first five finishers in the race receive points following the scale 25-20-17-14-12. Should Ten Voorde win, he would catch Pereira, who starts the race with a four-point advantage. Lying 21 points behind the championship leader, Ayhancan Güven (Turkey/Martinet by Almeras) also has an outside chance of claiming the crown. Like Pereira and Ten Voorde, the Porsche Junior has won two rounds of this season’s Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. Larry ten Voorde, however, is a clear favourite to take home the title at the Supercup finale on Sunday – not only because he is starting from pole. The Dutchman has already notched up three victories in Monza at the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup: in 2019 in the real Supercup and recently at the two sim racing events of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Virtual Edition contested at the virtual Autodromo.

Rookies: Köhler scores his best starting position

Leon Köhler was thrilled about scoring his best starting position among the circle of rookies. “I’d like to advance one or two places up the rookie rankings,” explained the German. Güven and his rookie colleague Jean-Baptiste Simmenauer (France/Lechner Racing Middle East) line up on the grid directly behind him.

Köhler and Simmenauer are among the four aspirants for the rookie title. Leader of the rookie category Max van Splunteren (Team GP Elite; 71 points) planted his Porsche on the 17th grid spot. Marvin Klein (France/Martinet by Alméras; 68), Köhler (56) and Simmenauer (55) could overtake the Dutchman. A special prize awaits the winner of this classification: He gets the chance to contest the Porsche Carrera Cup Le Mans in a fortnight at the wheel of a 911 GT3 Cup run by the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup Organisation. The race contested by both the German and French Porsche Carrera Cups is run as part of the 24-hour classic.
