Resetting the SUV segment
The launch of the first Cayenne in 2002 did more than introduce Porsche performance to the sports utility vehicle (SUV) category. It redefined the segment and reset records, with the 331 kW (450 PS*) Cayenne Turbo quickly earning the title of fastest series-production SUV at the time.
Equipped with Porsche cornering dynamics, the first-generation Cayenne exceeded the expectations of Porsche customers and drivers.
But the first Cayenne model series offered more than sports car performance and long-distance comfort. Thanks to its comprehensive design and engineering program, the popular Cayenne delivered serious off-road capabilities.
A newly developed Porsche Traction Management (PTM) system with multi-plate clutch directed drive between the front and rear wheels to any proportion. A dynamic centre differential lock, a low-range transfer case, and the availability of air suspension delivered traction on the toughest terrain.
And thanks to the clever interaction of onboard systems such as Porsche Stability Management (PSM), ABS braking and ABD (Automatic Brake Differential), the Cayenne offered a wide performance band width, giving it the characteristics of a sports car as well as an off-roader.
