Pure driving to a T
The model designation “T” denotes “Touring” on selected Porsche models.
The meaning of T: Porsche models bearing this special designation are built with precise tuning, sporty equipment and efficient engines to deliver an especially authentic driving experience.
The “Touring” model designation began with the homologation of the 911 T as a touring car in 1968. This first 911 T was offered until 1973. In 2017 Porsche revived this purist 911 variant with the Type-991 911 Carrera T.
Today, two models in the Australian Porsche range are available with the T model specification. They are the 911 and Macan.
Model positioning: The unique product specification of the new Porsche 911 Carrera T positions it between the 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S.
Australian model series
The introduction of the new 911 Carrera T brings the Australian-market Porsche 911 Carrera coupé model range to seven variants:
- 911 Carrera
- 911 Carrera 4
- 911 Carrera T
- 911 Carrera S
- 911 Carrera 4S
- 911 Carrera GTS
- 911 Carrera 4 GTS
“The 911 Carrera T brings together many lightweight construction and performance options, such as the PASM sports suspension and the seven-speed manual gearbox. This combination is distinctive of our touring models and enables a particularly puristic driving experience.” Frank Moser, Vice President Product Lines 911 and 718
Engine: twin-turbocharged performance
The new 911 Carrera T is powered by Porsche’s bi-turbo (twin-turbocharged) 3.0-litre flat-six-cylinder petrol engine.
This is the same power unit fitted to the 911 Carrera and 911 Carrera S coupé model variants.
Power and torque: The 911 Carrera T delivers a maximum power level of 283 kW / 385 PS* at 6,500 rpm. The peak torque level of 450 Nm is available between 1,950 – 5,000 rpm, offering exceptional driving response across the majority of the engine’s rev range.
The technical highlights behind this engine’s performance are:
Two symmetrical turbochargers and two charge air coolers located centrally over the engine under the rear grille
Innovative VarioCam Plus variable valve control for the precise management of gas exchange. This is done using asymmetrical intake camshafts, which allow the two adjacent valves of a cylinder to open with a different lift in the partial load position. Their differences in cross section and opening duration produce a defined swirl in the process air that flows into the combustion chamber, which improves mixture preparation and combustion. As a result, fuel consumption and emissions are reduced.
Sports exhaust system: The new 911 Carrera T is fitted with a sports exhaust system that includes a modified silencer and twin oval stainless steel tailpipe trims with a Black high-gloss finish.
Transmission: 7-speed manual or 8-speed PDK
The 911 Carrera T uses a rear-wheel drive (RWD) layout.
The 911 Carrera T is fitted with a seven-speed manual gearbox as standard equipment.
The manual gearshift lever has a precise action and has been shortened by 10 mm for a sportier feel.
The optional eight-speed Porsche PDK (Porsche Doppelkupplung, German for ‘double coupling’) dual-clutch automatic transmission is available as a no-cost option.
When fitted with the eight-speed Porsche PDK gearbox, drivers can choose to drive in Automatic mode or manually make gearchanges using the gearshift lever. Gears can be selected sequentially by pulling backwards to upshift and pushing forwards to downshift (the same directions used in motorsport).
Manual gearchanges with the Porsche PDK transmission can also be made using the steering wheel-mounted gear-shift paddles (fitted when the Porsche PDK transmission option is chosen.)
The 911 Carrera T is fitted with Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) and a mechanical rear differential lock when specified with the seven-speed manual transmission.
- Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) delivers electronically controlled brake interventions to the rear wheels to enhance driving dynamics.
- The mechanical rear differential lock works closely with the PTV system to provide more agile handling and faster cornering by controlling the speed of each rear wheel using precisely measured power delivery.
Chassis: driving purity
Porsche’s chassis engineers have equipped the 911 Carrera T with the Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) sport suspension system, which includes a 10 mm lowered ride height. This makes a significant contribution to the purist driving experience offered by the 911 Carrera T.
- PASM ensures the 911 Carrera T’s suspension dampers respond immediately to dynamic changes.
- PASM can make the dampers much firmer, giving the driver dynamic handling advantages in terms of body control, road-holding, steering behaviour and potential cornering speeds.
The Sport Chrono package with Sport Response button is also fitted to the 911 Carrera T. It includes:
- Driving Mode switch (rotational) mounted to the heated GT sport steering wheel. The chosen driving mode (Normal, Sport, Sport Plus, Individual) is displayed in the instrument cluster.
- Porsche Track Precision App
- Tyre temperature display
The Sport Response button (located in the centre of the Drive Mode dial switch) further enhances driving performance and enjoyment by letting the driver switch the engine and transmission response to maximum performance for 20 seconds.
Electromechanical power-assisted steering with variable steering ratio and steering pulse generator is fitted to the 911 Carrera T. It gives drivers excellent steering response and comfort through the steering wheel, especially on winding mountain and country roads.
Power Steering Plus is available as a no-cost option on the 911 Carrera T. It offers drivers additional comfort by making the steering firmer at higher speeds, delivering good feedback on driving conditions, road surface and lateral acceleration. At low speeds it provides greater steering force to make maneuvering and parking easier.
The front axle uses a McPherson strut design with anti-roll bar for precise steering control, handling and ride comfort.
The rear axle design uses a multi-link layout with anti-roll bar which helps provide exceptional handling, ride control and comfort.
Brakes
The 911 Carrera T braking system is the same as that fitted to the 911 Carrera. Its key dimensions are:
Front brakes:
- 330 mm diameter discs (34 mm thickness) internally vented and cross-drilled
- Four-piston Aluminium monobloc fixed brake calipers (black in colour)
Rear brakes:
- 330 mm diameter discs (28 mm thickness) internally vented and cross-drilled
- Four-piston Aluminium monobloc fixed brake calipers (black in colour)
An electrically operated parking brake is fitted.
Wheels and tyres
The 911 Carrera T is fitted with 20-inch (front) and 21-inch (rear) wheels Titanium Grey Carrera S wheels.
The wheel and tyre dimensions are:
- Front: 8.5J x 20 ET 53 with 245/35 ZR 20 tyres
- Rear: 11.5J x 21 ET 67 with 305/30 ZR 21 tyres
Onboard tyre pressure monitoring (TPM) is also fitted.
Lightweight construction
The new 911 Carrera T has an impressive unladen weight of 1,470 kg thanks to considered weight-saving measures. This lower weight contributes to the 911 Carrera T’s exceptional driving dynamics and performance.
Porsche’s engineers have fitted the following equipment to help achieve the 911 Carrera T’s lighter weight:
- Standard-fitment seven-speed manual transmission
- Lightweight noise-insulated glass
- Removal of the rear seats and reduced vehicle insulation (no-cost option)
- Lightweight battery
The new 911 Carrera T is up to 35 kg lighter compared to the entry-series 911 Carrera, which is fitted with a PDK transmission as standard equipment.
Driving performance
The 911 Carrera T offers pure driving performance thanks in part to its light weight of 1,470 kg (with the seven-speed manual transmission). It is the lightest series 911 with the entry-level engine, 35 kg lighter than the 911 Carrera with its standard-fitment eight-speed PDK transmission.
Combined with its free-revving and torque-rich 283 kW / 385 PS* engine, the 911 Carrera T achieves the following performance figures:
0 – 100 km/h: 4.0 seconds (PDK; 4.5 seconds with seven-speed manual transmission)
