Burton turns pole position into maiden Norisring victory

Gustav Burton (Forch Racing by Atlas Ward) celebrated his maiden victory in the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland on Saturday at the Norisring. The Briton started from pole position and took the chequered flag first.

“My first win feels fantastic. I’d never raced at this circuit before and my team gave me a great car. On social media, I probably come across as a relaxed guy who likes to laugh at himself. But that doesn’t mean I’m not serious about winning,” said a delighted Burton, who has 55,000 followers on Instagram. South Africa’s Keagan Masters (Proton Competition) finished second, while Porsche Junior Flynt Schuring (NL/Schumacher CLRT) took third. As a result, Masters moved to the top of the championship standings with 177 points.

On the narrow 2.126-kilometre street circuit in Nuremberg, Burton held the lead after the start lights went out. All 28 drivers lined up behind him in their 520 hp Porsche 911 Cup cars. However, after just a few metres, a major collision forced three cars to retire from the race. After the Safety Car was deployed initially, Race Control decided to suspend the race due to ongoing recovery operations. With around 17 minutes of race time remaining, the field was released behind the Safety Car for the restart. Burton remained fully focused but came under constant pressure from Schuring and Masters throughout the remaining laps. After 30 laps, Burton celebrated by climbing onto the roof of his car and raising his arms in triumph. Masters was pleased with second place, while Schuring collected valuable championship points in third. Schuring also set the fastest lap of the race with a time of 49.850 seconds. The driver who records the highest number of fastest laps over the course of the season will receive the “Fastest Lap Award” and a Porsche Design Chronograph 1 – All Black Numbered Edition at the final race weekend.

The Dutchman Niels Langeveld (Laptime-Performance) crossed the finish line in fourth ahead of Matheus Ferreira (Team GP Elite) from Brazil, who was the highest-placed Talent Pool driver. Britain’s Joseph Warhurst (Target) secured sixth place ahead of rookie class winner Gustav Bergström (Team Proton) from Sweden. Theo Oeverhaus (D/ID Racing) finished eighth.

“I’m really happy to be back at the top of the standings,” said Masters. After 11 of the 16 races, the 26-year-old leads the championship with 177 points, while Oeverhaus follows in second on 166. Schuring is third with 158 points. The battle in the ProAm classification is equally intense: Michael Essmann (D/Team75 Bernhard) moved ahead of Sören Spreng (D/GP Elite) with his ProAm victory and now leads the standings with 218 points compared to Spreng’s 216.
