Penultimate round in Austria could prove decisive in the title fight

The Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland heads into its decisive phase this weekend (12 to 14 September 2025) at Austria’s Red Bull Ring. The penultimate round of the season could bring preliminary decisions in three of the four title battles. The one-make series featuring the Porsche 911 GT3 Cup will stage its 13th and 14th races of the year on the Formula 1 circuit near Graz.

At the Sachsenring, championship leader Alessandro Ghiretti of France significantly extended his lead over Robert de Haan. Driving for Schumacher CLRT, the Porsche Junior celebrated a victory and a second-place finish, while his rival from the German Proton Huber Competition team ran into problems in both races. Coming into the ‘semi-final’ in Austria, the Dutchman trails Ghiretti by 34 points.

Ghiretti is confident that the Carrera Cup races in Styria will do little to alter the situation. “Unlike the Sachsenring, my team and I know the Red Bull Ring very well. I’m confident I can fight for victory there and defend my lead in the standings,” said the 23-year-old, turning his attention to the next challenge. Although Ghiretti secured the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup title last weekend. Albeit, when the international one-make series visited the Red Bull Ring in June, he had to concede victory to his title rival in both series: In the Supercup race, Haan finished runner-up and Ghiretti claimed third.

Another strong contender for victory in Austria is Flynt Schuring, a driver from the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland Talent Pool and newly crowned Rookie Champion of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. The 19-year-old Dutchman claimed his first Carrera Cup win at the same venue last year. This season competing for Schumacher CLRT, he has already celebrated three victories and currently ranks fourth in the overall standings.

The situation is equally comfortable for Michael Schrey, who leads the ProAm classification. With seven class victories to his name, the German from the Bonk Motorsport squad has established a 36-point advantage over his nearest rival, Ahmad Alshehab. The Kuwaiti has so far celebrated two ProAm wins at the wheel of a Porsche 911 GT3 Cup fielded by team [a-workx] by Porsche Paderborn.

In the Teams’ standings, double Supercup champion Schumacher CLRT has a strong chance of securing the title in its debut Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland season. Thanks to points earned by Porsche Junior Alessandro Ghiretti and Dutch Talent Pool driver Flynt Schuring the French equipe holds a 37-point lead over the Dutch GP Elite squad.

The 2023 Carrera Cup team champion is still chasing its first win in the current season, but thanks to consistent results, Dutchman Huub van Eijndhoven has recently climbed to third place overall in the Drivers’ standings. His teammates, Israel’s Ariel Levi and Dutchman Kas Haverkort, currently sit sixth and seventh respectively.

The final bid for the title among the Carrera Cup rookies is shaping up to be nail-biting: in the Rookies’ standings, only a single point separates the leader from his closest rival. With two class victories at the Sachsenring, Talent Pool driver Joseph Warhurst closed the gap to leader Sacha Norden. Both the Briton and the Dutchman race under the Proton Huber Competition banner, albeit in two separate teams.

“Most of our drivers and teams are very familiar with the Red Bull Ring. That should make for an exciting qualifying session – just like last season when only a second separated the fastest driver from 20th place. What’s more, this Formula 1 circuit offers plenty of overtaking opportunities. I think the fans can look forward to two thrilling races,” said Thorsten Rückert, Project Manager of the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland, in anticipation of the weekend.

Racing with synthetic fuel

Committed to cutting CO₂ emissions in motorsport, the Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland will use the synthetic fuel “DTM Pro Climate” across all eight race weekends in the 2025 season. Partnering with the Carrera Cup, ADAC is also adopting this fuel for the first time for its DTM, ADAC GT Masters, and GT4 Germany series.

The racetrack: Red Bull Ring

Today’s Red Bull Ring has its roots in the Österreichring, which opened in 1969 near Zeltweg in the municipality of Spielberg. From 1970, Formula 1 races were held on the Styrian circuit, which was approximately six kilometres long at the time. In 1995 and 1996, the Österreichring underwent extensive modernisation and was renamed the A1-Ring. After further reconstruction, the circuit reopened in 2011 with its current length of 4.326 kilometres.

Last season, Flynt Schuring claimed his maiden Porsche Sixt Carrera Cup Deutschland victory at the Red Bull Ring, while Briton Harry King won the second race.
