This design highlights the importance Porsche places on the transfer of technology between the racetrack and the road. The most notable commonality between the Cayenne and the 99X is that both recover large amounts of energy during braking and, with up to 600 kW of recuperation power, they feature highly efficient electric powertrains.
“The Cayenne Electric is a prime example of the much-cited technology transfer from motorsport to production,” says Thomas Laudenbach, Vice President Porsche Motorsport. “Energy recovery through the electric machines during braking is just one area where significant knowledge transfer has taken place. Another is the highly efficient direct oil cooling of the electric motors – a concept that already characterized our first Formula E vehicle in 2019. We will be taking a closer look at these and other examples in the run-up to the Cayenne’s world premiere.”
The distinctive Cayenne prototype has already made several public appearances – including with Gabriela Jílková at the wheel, who primarily supports the Formula E project through simulator work. Jílková set a record at the international hill climb at Shelsley Walsh and later drove the SUV at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. On Friday, the Czech driver will drive the 99X Electric for the third consecutive year as part of the Formula E test sessions in Valencia, where she will complete the final laps before the season begins in December.
At the start of testing, both 99X Electric race cars from the factory Porsche Formula E team will sport the Cayenne-inspired look. Since the cars will be shipped to Brazil immediately after the test week for the first race, the team will revert to the familiar livery while still in Valencia.
Porsche in Formula E
As the reigning Teams’ and Manufacturers’ World Champion, Porsche will contest its seventh Formula E season in 2025/2026. In addition to the factory Porsche Formula E Team, the US customer team Andretti Formula E will compete with the highly efficient Porsche 99X Electric of the latest generation GEN3 Evo. A second Porsche customer team, Cupra Kiro, will also participate, relying on 99X technology from the previous generation GEN3. In Formula E, the brand gains valuable insights for its production sports cars.
