The 21-year-old Pole was the 2022 season’s top player. Before triumphing for the first time at the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in April, she won the tournaments in Doha, Indian Wells and Miami. After her success in the Porsche Arena, the world No. 1 claimed the Grand Slams in Paris and New York and bagged the tournaments in Rome and San Diego. She won a total of 67 matches during the year. From February to June, she went on a 37-match winning streak – the longest series of victories in women’s tennis since Martina Hingis in 1997. She was only recently named by the Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) as its Player of the Year.
Iga Swiatek won the title on her maiden appearance at the long-standing Stuttgart tournament after defeating Aryna Sabalenka in two straight sets in the final. “I loved the atmosphere in Stuttgart last year and am looking forward to this one”, she says. “I especially appreciate tournaments so close to Poland because my fans can support me on-site and it makes the atmosphere even better; so, I’m happy confirm I’m going to play there in 2023.”
For Tournament Director Markus Günthardt, the Pole’s confirmation of entry is an early Christmas present. He says: “The fact that Iga will also be coming to the 2023 Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is a fantastic compliment for the tournament. I’m so pleased for our spectators. In confirming, she’s basically saying that she felt very much at home in Stuttgart. Her return also shows that the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and its traditionally strong draw is exactly the right sporting challenge that a top player like Iga loves, and it’s one that she wants to take on.”
