After triumphing in Wimbledon in 2018, the Porsche Brand Ambassador and two-time winner of the Porsche Tennis Grand Prix is now looking forward to returning to the London suburb and the world’s most famous tournament – with a clear goal: “I want to successfully defend my title.”
Angelique, the tournament in Wimbledon begins on 1 July. How much are you looking forward to it?
“Wimbledon has a special importance in my career so I’m really looking forward to it. I dreamed of winning Wimbledon when I was just a young kid. Playing there now as the title-holder is something very special for me and it’s bound up with big emotions.”
By winning last year, you fulfilled a big dream. What are your memories of it?
“The win was pure joy. Also now one year afterwards, the emotions come flooding back over and over again. The moment I raised the silver salver above my head after the final was the one I’d worked years and years for.”
You played for the first time on grass this year at the Mallorca Open. How did it go?
“I felt back at home right away after the first practice sessions. I’m still not 100 per cent but I feel good.”
Are you therefore fit for Wimbledon?
“I certainly hope so. To win the tournament, things have to go perfectly over the whole fortnight. The positive memories of the title win last year are helping me in my preparations and increasing my anticipation ahead of my return to Wimbledon.“
What may the fans expect?
“I want to successfully defend my title. That’s my big goal.”
