The reorganization of the plant utilisation emphasises the high flexibility within production, which the Volkswagen Group achieves as a result of the gradual modularisation of existing and new factories. This also applies to Porsche: Because today's decision marks a new chapter in the success story of the Leipzig site.
The production and painting of the Panamera bodies will commence in Leipzig as of 2016 as a result of the reorganisation of the production network within the Volkswagen Group. Porsche already owns appropriate expansion areas there.
Investments totalling approx. EUR 500 million
"The complete production of the next Panamera generation in Leipzig is a logical step both strategically and economically, and at the same time represents the continuation of the Porsche success story in Saxony," emphasises Matthias Müller, Chairman of the Executive Board of Porsche AG. A few weeks ago, the sports car manufacturer successfully put the Leipzig plant into operation that was expanded for the production of the Macan. "The site was expanded with extensive investments totalling approx. EUR 500 million from an assembly plant to a comprehensive plant with its own body and paint shop and is now ready for additional vehicle projects."
Since the market launch of the Panamera in 2009, the bodies-in-white have been manufactured and painted at the Volkswagen plant in Hanover. They are then transferred to the Porsche site in Leipzig for preassembly and final assembly.
