Dream start on home turf for BWT Lechner Racing

Dutchman Robert de Haan will start the fourth round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup at the Red Bull Ring in Austria from the top spot on the grid. His BWT Lechner Racing teammate, Frenchman Marvin Klein, will line up alongside him on the front row.

Porsche Junior Alessandro Ghiretti qualified in fifth place, while championship leader Theo Oeverhaus experienced a disappointing qualifying. The German Porsche Junior will start the race in twelfth place. A dream start to the fourth round of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup for BWT Lechner Racing: Robert de Haan secured his second pole position of the season at the 4.3-kilometre Grand Prix track in Spielberg, Styria. Just 0.043 seconds behind, Marvin Klein planted the second Porsche 911 GT3 Cup fielded by the Austrian squad on the front row in second place. Meanwhile, Israel’s Ariel Levi, driving for Team GP Elite, also delivered a strong qualifying performance to claim the third grid spot.

Porsche Junior Alessandro Ghiretti (Schumacher CLRT) finished fifth behind his French compatriot Mathys Jaubert (Martinet by Alméras). The second Porsche Junior, Supercup points leader Theo Oeverhaus from Proton Huber Competition, has to settle for P12 for Sunday’s race. The best-performing rookie was Dutchman Flynt Schuring (Schumacher CLRT) in sixth place. The intensity of competition in the 2025 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup was evident in qualifying, with less than nine-tenths of a second separating the top 23 drivers.

“It was incredibly close – I’m absolutely thrilled,” beamed Monaco winner de Haan. “I turned a fantastic lap right at the end. I made a tiny mistake in the final corner, so to still take pole by such a small margin is a great feeling. P1 and P2 are exactly what we were aiming for as a team. We’ll try to pull it all together perfectly tomorrow to deliver the best possible result for the squad. We all need the points, so we have to be smart.” His teammate Marvin Klein echoed the sentiment: “A strong qualifying session for us. I was able to make good progress from the first to the second set of tyres, which helped me secure a spot on the front row. Now we need to get both cars on the podium. We need those points in the team standings just as much as we need them in the drivers’ standings.”

Ariel Levi wasn’t entirely satisfied with his third place: “It was a good session, and starting from the second row puts me in a strong position. But I think pole was within reach today. On my first flying lap with new tyres, a rival braked too late in front of me, so I had to back off the pace. By the second lap, the tyres had already lost their peak grip. That easily cost me more than the tenth of a second that separates me from pole.”

The two Porsche Juniors had mixed feelings about their qualifying sessions. “Fifth place is a decent starting point for the race, but I think we had the potential for more,” explained Barcelona winner Alessandro Ghiretti. “You really need to run in a pack on this track to benefit from the slipstream. I was on my own, which wasn’t ideal.” Theo Oeverhaus was openly self-critical: “I didn’t deliver my best performance today, and of course, the result is disappointing. That said, this circuit tends to see a lot of action during the race, which could play into my hands starting from P12. Let’s see how far we can advance.”
