Petkovic and Kerber put Porsche Team Germany 2-0 up in Brisbane. After the fantastic start, the German women now only need one more point to clinch a place in the final for the first time since 1992. „I’m really proud of my players,” said team captain Barbara Rittner who at the same time warned of too much euphoria: „We’re in a good position but we’re not through yet.”
Porsche Team Germany 2:0 up
The first point for Porsche Team Germany in the Pat Rafter Arena was supplied by Andrea Petkovic who beat Samantha Stosur 6-1, 7-6 (9-7). The 26-year old converted her fifth match point in the tie-break to secure her first ever victory against the former US Open champion. „We were both very, very nervous. We’re so desperate to get to the final,” said Andrea Petkovic. That Porsche Team Germany is already on the verge of achieving their goal aim is also down to Angelique Kerber. The 26-year old followed up by beating fellow left-hander Casey Dellacqua 6-1, 6-0 in only 50 minutes. Speaking after her comfortable win, the visibly relieved winner said, „I’m so happy to have won the second point. We’re now in with a really good chance of reaching the final.”
Play on Sunday will begin with the duel between the two No. 1s, Angelique Kerber and Samantha Stosur. The day’s second singles will see Andrea Petkovic take on Casey Dellacqua. In the concluding doubles Julia Görges and Anna-Lena Grönefeld will face Casey Dellacqua and Ashleigh Barty.
In the second Fed Cup semifinal, Czech Republic are playing title holders Italy in Ostrava.
