Victory for António Félix da Costa and double podium for Porsche in Shanghai

Victory and double podium for Porsche: António Félix da Costa notched up his second win of the season on day two of Formula E’s debut in Shanghai on Sunday. A fortnight ago, the works driver from Portugal won Porsche’s home race in Berlin – in both events he led the field for most of the race.

Race 12

Norman Nato from the Andretti Formula E customer team rounded off the strong performance of the efficient Porsche 99X Electric in the major Chinese metropolis, with the Frenchman claiming a podium for the first time this season. He clinched third place after swapping for the leadseveral times with da Costa. Thanks to today’steam effort, Porsche defended its position at the top of the manufacturers’ championship. The Porsche 99X Electric has won five races so far – more than any other vehicle in the field.
 
Bad luck for Pascal Wehrlein, who was forced to pit during the race with a puncture after being shunted by a rival. The current runner-up in the world championship wrapped up the race in 20th and missed out on earning points. In eleventh place, Jake Dennis, the defending world champion from the Andretti Formula E customer team, also went home empty-handed.

Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche works driver (#94): “The car’s balance wasn’t great in practice and qualifying. The grip wasn’t right either. After qualifying we found the problem and fixed it in time for the race – it was caused by the incident yesterday. I then succeeded in making up a few positions in the race before someone hit the rear of my car and caused a puncture. I had to call it quits after that.”

Race 11

Pascal Wehrlein narrowly missed out on securing his third win of the season at Formula E’s maiden race in Shanghai. After a long stint in the lead, the winner of Mexico City and Misano crossed the finish line in second. Thanks to this result, Pascal earned enough points to retain second place in the gripping fight for the drivers’ title.

António Félix da Costa, his teammate in the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, was also on course for the podium in the Porsche 99X Electric until a few laps before the flag. Ultimately, the winner of Sunday’s race in Berlin took the flag in fifth place, followed by world champion Jake Dennis in his Porsche, fielded by the Andretti Formula E customer outfit. His teammate Norman Nato finished in 16th place. 
 
In a race where energy management again proved crucial, Wehrlein and da Costa lead most of the race in tandem. The pair’s competitive approach once again showcased the efficiency of the Porsche 99X Electric.

Comments on the Shanghai E-Prix, Race 11

Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E: “What a thrilling first day of racing in Shanghai with fierce duelling at the top. We attempted to win the race from the front. In the final stage, Pascal fell back to second place after spending a long time in the lead, but he defended it valiantly to the flag. António put in a strong drive only to lose a few positions on the last lap and finish fifth. A total of three Porsche ended up in the top six. That’s a great performance which we can be very happy with. We have the pace and the performance. Now we’re determined to fight for victory tomorrow, as well.”
 
Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche works driver (#94): “We possibly took the lead a little too early today. This meant I couldn’t save enough energy to stay at the top until the flag. It was a tough fight over the entire distance. We get another chance tomorrow and we want to make better use of it.”

Preview

As the leader in the manufacturers’ championship, Porsche celebrates its first Formula E event with the Porsche 99X Electric in China, the company’s second largest single market. With four victories so far this season, the Weissach-built electric car has achieved more wins than any other vehicle in the field – three for the works team and one for the Andretti Formula E customer team.

António Félix da Costa, from Portugal, travels to Shanghai with great momentum after winning the second race at Porsche’s home race in Berlin. The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team claimed valuable championship points in the capital thanks to both drivers (55 in total), while Andretti Formula E took a pole position in Berlin. 

Comments ahead of the Shanghai E-Prix

Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E: “Our victory in Berlin is exactly the motivation we need as we turn onto the home stretch of the season. But we’re not able to savour our home race win for long; Formula E’s current two-week rhythm doesn’t allow the teams to take a deep breath. In Shanghai, we compete on a very wide, permanent racetrack and we can expect the races to be similar to Berlin. Energy management will also play a key role in the double-header event there. We already underlined in Misano that we have a competitive package for such racetracks. Like Berlin, Porsche employees will visit us at the track in China. Our brand is very popular there.”
