Porsche and World Champion Wehrlein enter their sixth Formula E season with multiple new features

The TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team enters its sixth season in the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship at the São Paulo E-Prix on 7 December – in new colours and as world champion for the first time after Pascal Wehrlein’s championship victory.

The new Swiss works driver Nico Müller will make his race debut in the brand-new GEN3 Evo generation of the Porsche 99X Electric in Brazil – for the established Porsche customer team Andretti Formula E. Also new: The fellow American team Cupra Kiro sees a second Porsche customer team join the field. They will be relying on 99X technology from the previous generation, GEN3, with which the works team and Andretti each won a world championship title. David Beckmann, most recently the reserve driver for the TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, was given a regular seat at Cupra Kiro, making him the sixth official Porsche driver in the field.

António Félix da Costa, Wehrlein’s teammate, is particularly excited for the race on the 2.933-kilometre version of the “Circuito do Anhembi”. The 33-year-old from Portugal has a huge fan community in Brazil and therefore sees the São Paulo E-Prix as his home race. With sixth place in last year’s race there he started a steep rise in form, which culminated in his fourth and final win of the season three months later – no one got more season wins than da Costa. Teammate Pascal Wehrlein finished in fourth place in that race and battled his way to victory in the drivers’ world championship as the season progressed. This means that the first German Formula E champion is now in car number 1.

World Championship Title for Manufacturers

In addition to the drivers and teams, this is the first time that the manufacturers represented in Formula E are able to win a world championship title. The fiercely contested manufacturers’ trophy of last year is becoming a fully-fledged FIA world championship. The two highest ranking cars for each manufacturer will score points.

Porsche 99X Electric: New Look and Refined Technology

The new Porsche 99X Electric shines in expressive colours: They symbolise the technology transfer to production and come from the electric Taycan Turbo GT, the most powerful production vehicle Porsche has ever built. Innovations stipulated by the regulations include activation of the drive on the front wheels, tyres with more grip, and a modified front wing. The test programme for the highly efficient Porsche open-wheel car went according to plan.

Quotes on the São Paulo E-Prix

Florian Modlinger, Director Factory Motorsport Formula E: “Bring on the new season, we are ready for it. The goal is to fight for all three world championship titles until the last race and to win as many trophies as possible. Overall, there are many new features: the Porsche 99X Electric, the introduction of all-wheel drive, and, for the first time as a manufacturer, we will have six cars in the field. I would like to thank the whole team in Weissach for getting everything done according to plan. Although much is new, our works team remains the same, which is a good premise for the start of the season. We are expecting São Paulo to give us an initial idea of the balance of power in the field – providing that the qualifying sessions and race remain dry.”

Pascal Wehrlein, Porsche works driver (#1): “Our goals are clear: We want to defend the drivers’ world championship. However, there are also the team and the manufacturers’ titles. All three are important to us. Testing with the new GEN3 Evo cars went well. Personally, I also really like our new purple and green livery. We have revamped our pit to match the new colours. I’ve also modified my helmet to ensure that everything is perfect for the start of our sixth Formula E season.”

António Félix da Costa, Porsche works driver (#13): “I feel well prepared for São Paulo. Last season was a steep learning curve for me as an athlete, a person, and part of the team. I think that the challenges we faced at the start of the season really shaped us over the course of the season. And then we had an incredibly strong second half of the season with so many wins and fantastic results. São Paulo feels like a home race to me. Which makes everything even better.”

Nico Müller, Porsche dorks driver (#51): “I’m delighted to finally get the season started with Andretti Formula E. We are very well prepared for the start in São Paulo. The final tests with the new Porsche 99X Electric were also very promising. It is an honour to work with Jake Dennis, a former world champion. I will do my best to contribute to the team’s success.”

David Beckmann, Porsche development driver (#3): “Finally a regular driver! I’m over the moon about this opportunity and am looking forward to collaborating with Kiro and my team-mate there, Dan Ticktum. Thanks to Porsche I’m well prepared since after my two years as a replacement driver I’m already familiar with many of the processes, I’ve spent a lot of time in the simulator, and I was often at the track. I also made sure to accurately memorise the input that Pascal and António gave the engineers. Now I want to prove myself.”

Together with Cato Networks, the provider of the world’s leading SASE cloud platform, the partnership is entering its third successful year. Long-standing motorsport partner ExxonMobil’s Mobil1 brand is represented on the Porsche 99X Electric, as is simulation software specialist ANSYS. Completing the list of six on-car partners overall is LOCTITE, a brand of the technology company Henkel. Porsche in Formula E

2024/2025 sees Porsche contest its sixth Formula E season. In addition to the works TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team, American customer team Andretti Formula E is entering the Porsche 99X Electric of the latest GEN3 Evo generation. The concept of the innovative electric racing car was developed at the company’s Weissach facility, which operates on a net carbon-neutral basis. With the addition of Cupra Kiro, this season will be the first time that a second Porsche customer team has entered the series; they will be using 99X technology of the previous GEN3 generation. Porsche’s involvement in the world championship demonstrates the company’s aim to assume a leading role in the areas of electrification, sustainability and technology. Formula E gives the brand valuable insights for its production sports cars.
