Product Highlights: Taycan Cross Turismo: the all-rounder among electric sports cars

Porsche has expanded its first all-electric sports car range with the addition of a versatile off-road version, the Taycan Cross Turismo.

Like the Taycan sports sedan, the Taycan Cross Turismo benefits from Porsche’s innovative electric drive system with 800-volt architecture that delivers fast recharging, an impressive driving range, and typical Porsche performance.

The Taycan Cross Turismo continues Porsche’s systematic pursuit towards sustainable mobility.

Porsche’s first Cross Utility Vehicle (CUV)

The Taycan Cross Turismo is Porsche’s first Cross Utility Vehicle (CUV).

It combines the precise handling of a sports car with the long-distance comfort of a sedan and offers nearly as much space as an SUV.

Derived from the Taycan sports sedan, it offers flexibility, slightly more space, and versatility for active lifestyles in both urban and country environments.

Its standard all-wheel drive and new high-tech chassis maximise driving pleasure. And the standard-fitment Performance Battery Plus optimises driving range for touring.

Australian model range

Three model variants of the Taycan Cross Turismo are available in Australia, each fitted with Porsche’s 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus as standard equipment.

The Australian model range comprises:

  • Taycan 4 Cross Turismo
  • Taycan 4S Cross Turismo
  • Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo

Design

Visually, the Taycan Cross Turismo closely follows the Mission E Cross Turismo concept study presented at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show.

Porsche’s instantly recognizable “flyline” – the sporty roofline that slopes downward to the rear – defines the Taycan Cross Turismo’s silhouette. It’s a completely new roofline that’s been fitted with roof rails.

The permissible roof load with the Porsche Roof Transport System is 75 kilograms.

Off-road design elements include wheel arch trims, unique front and rear lower aprons and side sills. As part of the optionally available Off-Road Design package, special flaps are fitted at the corners of the front and rear bumpers and at the ends of the sills. These provide protection from stone impacts and make for a striking exterior.

Compared to the Taycan sports sedan, the Cross Turismo’s interior gives rear-seat passengers 30 millimetres of extra headroom, courtesy of the redesigned roofline.

Porsche carefully considered luggage space in the Taycan Cross Turismo; specifically its use, the items carried, and access. Up to 1,200 litres of luggage space is available in the rear area when the rear seats are folded down, making it the ideal leisure companion for golf or skiing. And the large rear tailgate makes it easy to load.

The Taycan Cross Turismo is fitted with Porsche’s 16.8-inch curved driver display which has five different and freely configurable settings (depending on equipment appointments).

Chassis: engineered for all-round driving performance

The high-tech chassis in all Australian Taycan Cross Turismo models features all-wheel drive and adaptive air suspension.

Porsche’s engineers optimised the suspension system to handle light off-road driving and gravel roads. Ground clearance has been raised 20 millimetres compared to the Taycan sports sedan. The optional Off-Road package increases ground clearance by up to 30 mm, allowing the Cross Turismo to be driven on more demanding off-road terrain.

The Taycan Cross Turismo has three available driving modes:

  • “Gravel Mode” activates settings for increased off-road capabilities on rough roads.
  • “Range Mode” activates efficiency-oriented settings to optimize the available driving range from the battery’s charge level.
  • “Sport Mode” activates performance driving settings, including Launch Control.

The Taycan Cross Turismo uses the same suspension layout as the Taycan sports sedan: a double-wishbone design at the front with a multi-link axle with double wishbones at the rear.

Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV Plus) and Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC Sport) are fitted as standard to the Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo. Both are optionally available on the Taycan 4 Cross Turismo and Taycan 4S Cross Turismo.

Powertrain: efficient performance

The Taycan Cross Turismo range uses the same 800-volt architecture and Porsche E-Performance powertrain from the all-wheel drive variants in the Taycan sports sedan range.

Its drive system comprises Permanent Synchronous Motors on the front and rear axles:

  • The rear electric motor drives a two-speed transmission on the rear axle.
  • The front electric motor drives a single-speed transmission on the front axle.

Optimising driving range is Porsche’s two-deck 93.4 kWh Performance Battery Plus, fitted as standard to all three Taycan Cross Turismo variants. This is the higher-output battery available in the Taycan model family (for comparison, the Taycan 4S sports sedan is fitted with Porsche’s single-deck 79.2 kWh Performance Battery as standard equipment).

Controlling power delivery from the battery to the electric motors are two pulse-controlled inverters, one located at each axle.

The key outputs for the Taycan Cross Turismo are listed below:

  • Taycan 4 Cross Turismo
    • 280 kW / 380 PS*
    • Overboost power for Launch Control: 350 kW / 476 PS*
  • Taycan 4S Cross Turismo
    • 360 kW / 490 PS*
    • Overboost power with Launch Control 420 kW / 571 PS*
  • Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo
    • 460 kW / 625 PS*
    • Overboost power with Launch Control 500 kW / 680 PS*

Charging the Taycan Cross Turismo in Australia

Recharging ports are fitted on both the driver’s side and front-passenger’s side of the Taycan Cross Turismo.

Australian models come with the Mobile Charger Connect as standard, providing intelligent charging functions as well as a Charging Cable (Mode 3) for use at AC public charging stations. For charging at 400 volt charging points, a 150 kW on-board DC-Charger is standard in Australia.

In Australia, owners will have several ways to charge their Taycan, including High Performance Charging, Home Charging, and Porsche Destination Charging.

  • High Performance Charging

Taycan Cross Turismo buyers receive a complimentary three-year subscription to Australia’s Chargefox Ultra-Rapid DC charging network (up to 350 kW), and complimentary charging at selected Chargefox-managed Fast DC charging sites (mostly 50 kW)&. Their subscription starts on the day of delivery and owners can download the Chargefox app via Google Play or the Apple App Store.

  • Home charging

Taycan Cross Turismo buyers can have their home recharging installation requirements assessed by Jet Charge. This can be arranged by Porsche Centre sales consultants at time of purchase.

The Home Energy Manager (standard inclusion) can optimise vehicle recharging in terms of performance, time and costs by continually monitoring the available power output supply and the power requirements of the Taycan Cross Turismo.

  • Porsche Destination Charging

The Porsche Destination Charging Network in Australia continues to grow across metropolitan and regional sites. Taycan Cross Turismo owners can use these complimentary charging facilities when they’re on the road. Porsche owners can find charging locations by visiting the Porsche Destination Charging network online.

What the press say

“The Porsche Taycan Turbo Cross Turismo is now the coolest wagon on the road. It’s got the performance and pace of a rocketship, as well as the tech to go toe-to-toe with one. And the cherry on top is that it’s all electric, meaning you won’t feel like you’re killing a forest or melting the ice caps every time you floor it.” Tung Nguyen, CarsGuide.com.au

Full review here.

“Everyone knows station wagons are versatile. Especially ones with a bit of extra ground clearance and all-wheel-drive, given only around 40 per cent of Australia’s public road network is sealed.

"Combining all this with an excellent electric drivetrain and the level of luxury, performance and dynamic prowess we’ve come to expect from Porsche and the Taycan Cross Turismo succeeds in ticking as many boxes as it attempts to.”

-Haitham Razagui, Wheels Magazine (Full review here.)

“Porsche pokes fun at the go-anywhere wagon by remixing its classic safari past with its high-performance EV present. As a sports car it is exceptional: sharp handling, blisteringly quick, and reassuringly predictable …it’s clear Porsche set out to make a performance car that is electric, and not an EV that can go fast.”

-Kez Casey, Drive.com.au (Full review here.)
