New Experience World in Japan

With the grand opening of the Porsche Experience Center in the greater Tokyo area, the one-of-a‑kind concept was expanded once again in October: PEC Tokyo is the ninth location for emotionally charged brand and driving experiences with sports cars developed on the company’s own courses in Zuffenhausen. Japan is the latest to join the portfolio of locations, which includes Hockenheim and Leipzig in Germany, Atlanta and Los Angeles in the US, Le Mans in France, Franciacorta in Italy’s Lombardy region, Silverstone in the UK, and Shanghai in eastern China.

The newest PEC location measures 43 square kilometers in size and blends with the natural beauty of Kisarazu on Tokyo Bay with its mild climate year-round. The relief of the 2.1-kilometer handling course follows the natural profile of the terrain with significant gains and drops in elevation. The course reproduces the famous curves of international racecourses such as the Carousel of Nürburgring Nordschleife and the Corkscrew at Laguna Seca, so you can experience them for yourself in Japan. The low-friction handling track with polished concrete surface is an invitation to practice controlled under- and oversteering at low speeds. With its gradients of up to 40 degrees, the demanding off-road course provides the opportunity to experience the outstanding performance of the Porsche Cayenne and Macan models. Additional highlights include the dynamic area for slalom driving, emergency braking, and acceleration exercises, as well as a wet skid pad.

The architecture of the new building in the center of PEC Tokyo incorporates Japanese stylistic elements. The facade was designed to look like Edo Kiriko cut glass, a traditional Japanese form of art, while the interior features typical Japanese stucco and stylistic elements of traditional horticulture. In addition to the real driving experience under the instruction of experienced Porsche driving trainers, visitors can test famous Porsche models on different international racecourses in the simulator at the location – or simply enjoy food and shopping in a stylish ambience.

“Particularly in the age of digitalization, real experiences and conversation with others are more important than ever before,” says Detlev von Platen, the member of the Porsche Executive Board responsible for sales and marketing, emphasizing the significance of the Porsche Experience Center.

Virtual Run

To support the Make-A-Wish Foundation, Porsche encouraged its employees around the world to run, donating three euros for each kilometer recorded by the app. A total of 67,559 kilometers were counted for the first virtual run and proceeds amounting to 200,000 euros were raised. In 2021, the virtual donation run replaced the traditional six-hour run in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen, which had to be canceled due to the pandemic. The international Make-A-Wish Foundation grants special wishes for children, teens, and young adults with critical illnesses. Whether it’s a James Bond adventure day, a chance to meet their idol, a visit to a special destination, or a slide for the yard, moments of happiness give them strength.

Back to the future

Released in 1985, 1989, and 1990, the movie trilogy Back to the Future made the DeLorean DMC-12 a world-famous time machine that transported the teenager Marty McFly, played by actor Michael J. Fox, across decades and centuries. The car actually exists and is the only model ever built by the Northern Irish DeLorean Motor Company, equipped with a 2.8-liter six-cylinder engine, originally designed by Italian industrial designer Giorgio Giugiaro, and implemented by Lotus under the direction of Colin Chapman.

In the movies, a fictitious flux capacitor enables the spectacular coupe with gull-wing doors to travel through time when the vehicle reaches a speed of 140 kmh, and a nuclear reactor in the rear of the car provides the 1.21 gigawatts of power required to initiate time travel. While the flux capacitor and reactor are both still a thing of science fiction to this day, the fast charging networks of Electrify America in the US and Ionity in Europe already offer more than 1.21 gigawatts of power – making charging easier and quicker through more charging points and faster charging, and resulting in more time for travel. This provided occasion for an entertaining campaign. With the friendly support of Universal Studios LLC and Amblin Entertainment, movie producer J. F. Musial filmed a 60-second video for Porsche Cars North America, whose protagonists – a Porsche Taycan Turbo S and the DeLorean DMC-12 – cross paths in California. Donald Fullilove, the actor who played Goldie Wilson in Back to the Future, is driving the Taycan. The video can be viewed at newsroom.porsche.com.
