This love of life gives people wings. It lets us be creative, fosters peak performance, and fires the “turbo” in us. At Porsche the turbo is part of the company’s success story, firmly anchored in its DNA. Turbo stands for dynamism, performance, and speed. Turbocharged. Unsurpassed. The ultimate.
The term comes from Latin. It means “whirl,” “circular movement,” or “vortex,” and gave the turbocharger its name. It makes me think of the legendary 917/30 race car from 1973 with its impressive 1,100 turbocharged horsepower. Or the first 911 Turbo from 1974, the first Turbo victory in Le Mans in 1976, and Porsche’s Formula One engines from the 1980s.
The term “turbo” marks the top—as it does in the new generation 911. A car that moves at the limits of what’s conceivable. Powerful, innovative, iconic. Consequently, the top models of the Taycan are also called Turbo and Turbo S. Our first all-electric Porsche combines tradition with modernity—even in the extension of its name.
Porsche has remained Porsche because the company’s employees have always demonstrated pioneering spirit. And the courage to keep changing and developing. This also applies to turbo technology, which is full of major innovations. We’ve tamed the brute force of turbocharged power and made it suitable for everyday use. Its charge has long meant more than power alone. It also delivers high efficiency, optimized fuel consumption, and superior quality.
This issue is dedicated to the turbo. We delve into the technology and travel the world for it. We reflect on the past and fly into the future. With this in mind, I wish you happy reading—and, as always, enjoy the ride.
