In March 1972 Volkswagen placed Development Order (EA) 425 for the design of a successor to the VW-Porsche 914. After the first drafts had been reviewed, the decision was made to proceed with Porsche’s proposal for a water-cooled four-cylinder front engine with rear transaxle. EA 425 had progressed to the preproduction stage when Volkswagen cancelled the project in late 1974 for reasons of product line policy. Porsche thereupon purchased the rights to the design and in early 1976 took the car to market as the Type 924. The 924 was built at the Audi plant in Neckarsulm. By using many existing components from VW, it was possible for Porsche to offer it for a base price of just DM 23,240. 150,684 of this entry-level Porsche had been built by the time its production run ended in 1988 with the 924 S.
