‟It couldn't have gone much better than that,” beamed Theo Oeverhaus after qualifying for the first race of the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season. In a thrilling last-ditch effort, the 20-year-old Proton Huber Competition driver from Germany secured the first pole position of the year in Imola. ‟I managed to put together a decent lap. The car felt great, thanks to my team. Now I can hardly wait to start the race – and hopefully win it! I should have the speed for that,” said Oeverhaus after his first ever pole position in the Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup. The second Porsche Junior, Frenchman Alessandro Ghiretti from the Schumacher CLRT team, planted his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup on P9.
Alongside Oeverhaus, Ariel Levi will tackle the 15-lap sprint race on Sunday from the front row. The Israeli was beaten to pole by a mere 32-thousandths of a second. ‟My qualifying went really well,” said the delighted driver from the GP Elite team. ‟It was hotter today than during yesterday’s practice, which suited me. My mechanics made some setup adjustments before switching to the new set of tyres, and that worked well. My goal for tomorrow? To win, of course!”
Clinching third place on the grid, Levi’s teammate Kas Haverkort also secured a promising starting position for the race on the 4.909-kilometre Grand Prix circuit in northern Italy. ‟Everything went perfectly,” reported the Dutchman. ‟I wasn’t as happy with the first set of tyres, but that wasn’t the deciding one. The car felt great with the new Michelins. That gave me the confidence to push hard. Now I’ll see how it goes tomorrow. In the Supercup, it’s all about finishing on the podium or at least in the top five in all the races. That said, I’m obviously going for victory!”
Two other hot favourites qualified behind Haverkort: Frenchman Marvin Klein from the Austrian team BWT Lechner Racing and Germany’s Alexander Tauscher from the Italian Target squad.
As the best rookie, Flynt Schuring set the sixth fastest time in his Porsche 911 GT3 Cup. ‟I’m satisfied,” explained the Dutchman from the French racing outfit Schumacher CLRT. ‟At first, I tried to find a good rhythm on my first set of tyres and test the track limits to avoid a penalty. With the second set of tyres, I managed to turn a good lap – I probably could have done a little better in the last sector. I’m optimistic for tomorrow. I’ll give it my best shot, and we’ll see what happens.”
Robert de Haan won both rounds of the Porsche Carrera Cup Deutschland at the same venue in April. On Sunday, the Dutchman will start the Supercup season opener from seventh place in the second Porsche 911 GT3 Cup fielded by BWT Lechner Racing. He will be joined on the grid by Frenchman Mathys Jaubert from the French racing team Martinet by Alméras. The youngest driver in the field, 18-year-old German Janne Stiak from Target SRL, rounds off the top 10. The extremely close level of competition is underlined by the tiny differences in lap times: only about two-tenths of a second separates the third and eleventh starting positions.
The first race of the 2025 Porsche Mobil 1 Supercup season will get underway on Sunday at 11:45 am. The programme includes 15 laps over a total distance of 73.63 kilometres, or a maximum race duration of 30 minutes plus one lap.
